What Is a Seiko Mod? A Buyer’s Guide

Seikomariner | Black — Watcheray watch guide

A Seiko mod is a modified watch or a custom build commonly associated with Seiko-compatible parts and movements. The term covers several kinds of watch, so the most useful question is what goes into the particular model you are buying.

At Watcheray, you can explore ready-to-order designs or choose a combination through a watch configurator. This guide explains the decisions that matter before you order.

Modified factory watch or custom build?

A modification can start with an existing factory watch and change components such as the dial, hands, bezel or bracelet. A custom build can instead be assembled from separately sourced components around a chosen movement. Those two routes can produce very different watches, even when both are described as Seiko mods.

A custom watch using a Seiko or TMI movement is not automatically a factory-produced Seiko watch. The movement, dial, case and bracelet can have different origins. Watcheray is an independent seller; our custom builds are not factory models endorsed by Seiko or the other brands referenced by design names. Read our brand affiliation information for more detail.

Start with the function you will actually use

Two watches with similar colours can offer quite different functions. Choose the function first, then narrow down the case shape and dial.

  • Time and date: a straightforward choice for everyday wear. Seikojust | Olive Green is an example using an NH35 automatic movement.
  • A second time zone: an NH34 GMT model such as GMTeiko | Bruce Wayne adds a separate 24-hour hand.
  • Elapsed-time measurement: Seitona | Panda uses the battery-powered VK63 meca-quartz chronograph.

These are examples from individual product specifications. A collection can contain different movements, so check the exact model rather than relying on the family name. Our NH35, NH34 and VK63 comparison explains the practical differences.

What can you personalise?

Available choices depend on the product. A configurator lets you explore the dial, case and bracelet combinations shown in that builder. A ready-to-order product may offer a smaller set of choices, such as a logo option or case size. The choices displayed on its page are the ones to review before adding it to your basket.

Begin with the Seikojust configurator if you want to explore that family, or compare the complete Seikojust collection for colour and styling ideas. For a specific combination you cannot find, ask Watcheray before ordering.

Five checks before buying a custom watch

  1. Dimensions: compare case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length where available. Use our 36mm vs 39mm guide to think through fit.
  2. Movement: read the named calibre and its actual functions. A chronograph, GMT and time-and-date watch solve different needs.
  3. Bracelet or strap: consider the clasp, adjustment and compatibility. See the Oyster-style vs Jubilee-style comparison.
  4. Materials and care: check the listed crystal, case material and water-resistance guidance for that model. A dive-inspired appearance alone does not establish a diving rating.
  5. Order details: confirm your selected options, assembly and delivery information, warranty and return terms before payment.

Ready-to-order design or configurator?

A ready-to-order design is useful when you already like the combination pictured. A configurator suits someone who wants to work through the available options. Both routes still benefit from checking dimensions and movement details before choosing.

Common questions

Does “Seiko mod” mean every component is made by Seiko?

No. Read the specific build description. A named movement does not establish the origin of the case, dial, hands or bracelet.

Are all Seiko mods automatic?

No. Watcheray’s range includes automatic and meca-quartz examples. Check the movement field on the exact product.

Can I request a design that is not listed?

Contact us with the model, dial, size and bracelet you have in mind. We can discuss the request before you place an order.
